John Mauel has more than 30 years of experience in handling the development, financing, acquisition, and divestiture of domestic and international LNG, oil and gas, and electric power projects, including the consortium structuring and joint venture arrangements involved in such projects.

John has had the opportunity to act as lead outside counsel in connection with several major LNG projects and transactions, including US LNG export projects, LNG receiving terminal projects on both sides of the Atlantic, major natural gas procurement and marketing transactions, and major LNG sale and purchase transactions. 

His oil and gas experience encompasses acting as lead outside counsel in connection with the purchase and sale of producing and non-producing oil and gas properties, including major acquisitions and divestitures of US shale oil and gas properties, and in connection with the purchase and sale of midstream assets such as gas processing plants and pipelines.

John's electric power experience includes acquisitions, divestitures, and project financings, and he is proficient with each major project agreement involved in gas-fired electric power projects, including long-term power purchase agreements and structured tolling arrangements.

John has practiced in Houston, Texas throughout his career with the exception of 2008 to 2010 when he resided in London.  He holds a B.A. (cum laude) degree in Economics from Harvard University and a J.D. degree from Notre Dame Law School.

    • Representation of a U.S. LNG export project company in connection with the structuring and negotiation of its major project agreements.
    • Representation of sellers and buyers in connection with various LNG sale and purchase agreements, including a long term 7.8 MTA LNG sale and purchase agreement .
    • Representation of the North American energy marketing and trading arm of a global financial services company in connection with a long term U.S. liquefaction tolling agreement.
    • Representation of a global trading company in connection with its capacity arrangements for a U.S. bi-directional LNG liquefaction and regasification terminal.
    • Representation of an LNG exporting national oil company in connection with its acquisition of a 70% equity interest in a Gulf of Mexico LNG receiving terminal and associated natural gas pipeline.
    • Representation of a U.S. LNG receiving terminal in connection with the structuring and negotiation of its long term terminal capacity agreements and associated project documents.
    • Representation of the base user of an LNG receiving terminal in the United Kingdom in connection with its long term terminal services agreements.
    • Representation of an international gas and power company in connection with its acquisition and development of an LNG terminal and pipeline project into Florida.
    • Representation of a major international oil company in connection with its development of an integrated LNG project into the Gulf of Mexico.
    • Representation of an independent oil and gas company in connection with its development of an LNG terminal in the offshore waters of Southern California.
    • Representation of a non-U.S. energy company in connection with its acquisition of an LNG tanker long-term time charter.

    • Representation of a U.S. independent oil and gas company in connection with its simultaneous sale of oil and gas properties in Kansas and Oklahoma, purchase of oil and gas properties in California, and entering into of a $1.5 billion secured reserve based revolving credit facility.  
    • Representation of an international energy company in connection with its acquisition of an undivided working interest in an Eagle Ford Shale play and the joint development of the subject oil and gas interest.
    • Representation of a publicly traded exploration and development company in connection with its acquisition of producing and non-producing oil and gas properties in New Mexico.
    • Representation of a potential buyer in its bid for the acquisition of a gas gathering system serving areas of the Eagle Ford Shale.
